Prerequisites and corequisites
All course requirements, including prerequisites and corequisites, are clearly listed in the VCU Bulletin course description and all will eventually be enforced in Banner (there will be a pilot in spring 2023 for corequisite and concurrent prerequisite checking on certain courses).
In general, a prerequisite course must be satisfied in a term before enrollment in another course, while a corequisite course must be taken during the same term as another course. Concurrent prerequisites can be taken either before or during the same term as another course. Select a topic below for more details:
A prerequisite course, exam or other requirement must be satisfactorily completed before taking another course.
When students are enrolled in a prerequisite course at the time they register for a future term and a final grade has not been assigned, Banner assumes successful completion of the prerequisite course and allows registration in another course to occur. If a student fails to successfully complete the prerequisite course, they may be dropped from the course in the next term that requires that as a prerequisite.
Enforced prerequisites can be found by clicking on a course title in eServices, then clicking on the Prerequisites or Course Description tab.

Course Description:
A concurrent prerequisite course and/or other requirement must be satisfactorily completed before or taken at the same time as another course. Concurrent prerequisite courses are considered to be "connected" in Banner. If a student attempts to drop a class that is an enforced concurrent prerequisite of another enrolled class and no override was given, the student will be warned that they must drop all connected classes.
Students may meet a concurrent prerequisite in one of the following ways:
- Earn at least the minimum grade in the prerequisite course in a prior term.
- Current enrollment in the prerequisite course when registering in the connected course for a future term.
- Register in the prerequisite course and connected course in the same term.
Concurrent prerequisites are not distinguished from standard prerequisites in eServices.
Enforced concurrent prerequisites can be found by clicking on a course title in eServices, then clicking on the Prerequisites or Course Description tab.

FAQs
A: Students cannot withdraw from a course that is a corequisite or concurrent prerequisite for another course while remaining in the other course without receiving an override to do so. For example, students cannot withdraw from CHEM 101 and remain in CHEZ 101; they must withdraw from both or obtain an override to withdraw from CHEM 101 only to remain in CHEZ 101. See course syllabus for
additional information.
